Intake for the MPhil in Clinical Science - TMAT is once a year in October.

This course is part of a new family of themed MPhils in Clinical Science and the taught elements are one of the key elements in a novel interdisciplinary TMAT programme designed to attract the brightest candidates at several levels of seniority, ranging from those simply seeking post-graduate diploma or masters training in this, from MB/PhD students, to Clinical PhDs and Clinical Lecturers. The main objective is to enable clinical scientists to 'translate science into medicines'. Each student is allocated an individual supervisor who will support throughout the course and will have a customised training programme, which may lead to a PhD.

The MPhil includes formal modular teaching in a wide range of translational and pharmacological skills, and a project which takes proof-of-concept studies in cell or animal systems forward to studies in humans. We have assembled an outstanding group of supervisors in Clinical Pharmacology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Metabolic Medicine, Neurosciences, Oncology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Therapeutic Immunology, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and our industrial partner, GlaxoSmithKline. Students will have the opportunity for hands on exposure to the design and conduct of experimental medicine studies investigating the therapeutic potential of new drug.

The components comprising the MPhil in Clinical Science (TMAT) are:

1. Introductory Course (compulsory but not assessed)

2. Generic Courses; any two of:
2.1 Medical Statistics
2.2 Practical Aspects of Clinical Research
2.3 Epidemiology

3. Specialist Courses (compulsory):
3.1 Clinical Pharmacology
3.2 Clinical Drug Development

4. Research Project (compulsory)

Optional Modules:
Weekly lecture series
Sanger Genetics lecture series

Assessment

The taught modules will be assessed by written 2 examinations, together comprising 50% of the final mark. The dissertation comprises the other 50% of the final mark (and 50% of the candidate's overall effort).

Candidates must attain at least 60% overall and at least 55% in both the examination component and the dissertation to be recommended for the degree.

In-course formative assessment (not contributing to the final mark) will also be required within modules and includes presentation to peers with feedback from staff.

Additional fees:

For 2012 intake Home/EU students will be liable for the University Composition rate and college fees as set out in the University fees section of the website. For overseas students the University composition fee includes a premium fee and will be £21,447 plus the college fee.
This payment must be made in the first week of term and students should ensure they have access to funds to cover this expense on arrival in Cambridge. It is not normally possible to apply to the Cambridge Trusts, colleges or other funding organisations for bursaries to cover these costs as they are considered a normal part of the course. Recipients of Gates Scholarships should note that any discretionary payment received as part of the award is intended to contribute to TMAT travel and bench fees. Payment must be made by means of a cheque made out to "University of Cambridge" and drawn on a UK bank account or in sterling (GB£).
