How to Apply

Graduate Admission at the University of Cambridge

Admission to the University requires completion of the University's online GRADSAF (Graduate Admission and Scholarship Application Form).

If you wish to apply for the Wellcome Trust TMAT PhD programme, you will need to enter a preliminary competition before completing the GRADSAF and should follow the instructions in section A below.

If you intend to apply for the MPhil in Clinical Sciences (TMAT) and wish to apply for funding (from e.g. Gates, Cambridge Overseas & Commonwealth Trusts, Cambridge Home and EU Scholarships) you should proceed directly to section B. Please note the 2012 entry application deadline is Friday 15th June 2012.

A 1) What funding does the Wellcome Trust TMAT PhD Programme provide?

The Wellcome Trust TMAT PhD Programme will award fees to students at the 'home rate' based on the current clinical rates (ST3-ST7 NHS Rate), college fees, research expenses and some travel and training costs. There are two tiers of fees: home and overseas. The home rate is applicable to all UK students and students from EU countries. The overseas rate is applicable to those who do not qualify for home fees. However, the terms home and overseas are complex and you should see the Graduate Prospectus for a definition of 'overseas'. The Wellcome Trust Programme does not pay fees at the overseas rate but there are highly competitive funding schemes that can pay the additional fees for overseas students. Please visit the Graduate Prospectus for information on supplementary funding schemes. You can also review other funding organisations visiting the Cambridge University Reporter. We cannot guarantee that applications will be successful.
Overseas applicants: Please note that in order to be considered for an Overseas Research Award (which covers the difference between Home/EU and overseas fees), the deadline for submission of the University Graduate Application Form is January.

  • If you are successful, you will then be required to apply for admission to the University (see section B below).
  • You will not be able to take up the award unless you are also successful in securing admission to the University and you will not be able to apply for a visa (if needed) until you hold an unconditional offer from the University

B) Admission to the University (MPhil in Clinical Sciences - TMAT)

You should apply for admission to the University using the University's online GRADSAF (Graduate Admission and Scholarship Application Form) if you:

  • wish to apply for University-wide funding competitions (eg Gates, Cambridge Overseas & Commonwealth Trusts, Cambridge Home and EU Scholarships etc – NB these funding competitions all have very early deadlines
  • have been awarded a specific studentship/programme position in competition (see section A)
  • wish to apply for a College studentship
  • have an external scholarship; or
  • have your own funding

BEFORE YOU COMPLETE A GRADSAF, READ THE FOLLOWING:

NB each application made using a GRADSAF will cost you £50 for an online application and £100 for a paper application.

B 1) Are you eligible to apply for admission to our programmes?

Competition for admission to the University of Cambridge graduate programme is intense. Like all departments in the Graduate School, we require all our graduate entrants to have:

  • at least a 2.1 in an Honours degree or equivalent (eg CGPA 3.5/4.0) in a relevant subject
  • two outstanding references from senior University staff at your most recent University
  • fluency in the English language – recent IELTS test with an overall band score of at least 7.0 with not less than 7.0 in speaking, listening and writing, and 6.5 in reading
  • The MPhil in TMAT is open to medical and non-medical graduates. Non-medical applicants generally have degrees in a quantitative science or a health related area. Other applicants will be judged on an individual basis depending on relevant previous experience

For more details of the University's academic requirements see the University's Graduate Prospectus.

B 2) Which qualification do you want to apply for?

  • Taught MPhil in Clinical Sciences (TMAT): Code MDMDM3 (also part time)
  • The MPhil in Clinical Sciences (TMAT) is a self funding programme (except for Academic Clinical Fellows applying via the Deanery)
  • The application deadline for entry in October 2012 is Friday 15th June 2012. No applications will be accepted after this date.
  • After ths date the course will be closed for entry but will re-open for October 2013 entry in the autumn of 2012.

B 3) What topic do you want to study and which supervisor do you want to work with? (PhD only)

The first question on the GRADSAF application form requires you to choose a course – for research applicants this means specifying which department or institute in which you wish to work.

To choose a department, you need to do some serious homework to identify a topic and one or more supervisors in that department with whom you wish to work.

If you have not already decided, you should:

  • Browse our Theme Leads and Supervisors and visit their personal/group page to check details of their research
  • Check if they have any vacancies this year by looking them up in the Graduate School's searchable database
  • If there is a possible vacancy, you can explore the possibility that your plans are of interest to them – get in contact (links are in the database)
  • If you are interested in more than one supervisor, you can name them as first and second choice in your application, but if you want to apply to supervisors in different departments, you will have to make separate applications (one to each department)
  • NB Many research topics are also available in other departments of the Graduate School of Life Sciences – browse the Graduate School's searchable database

B 4) How to apply to the University

Visit the Graduate School of Life Sciences for full instructions on how to apply online.

From 1st September 2011 applicants will be able to apply for 2012/13 admission online and upload all supporting documents electronically. Please see this link.
